Bespoke tales. Red red wine and the colour of love
Engagement ring, special order featuring asscher cut rhodolite of 8.53 carats with two trapezoid baguette cut diamonds claw set in platinum.
This ring was created by Rhys James Melbourne in 2018 at the request of sommelier Christopher Crawford to celebrate his marriage to winemaker Melanie Chester. The platinum ring with its two trapezoid baguette diamond shoulders complements the luxurious deep red wine hue of the rhodolite asscher of 8.53 carats.
Taking inspiration from the client's shared passion of wine was a wonderful starting point. The platinum and diamond mount in this creation acts almost as a wine glass would, providing a neutral coloured backdrop into which the elegantly proportioned purplish-red wine coloured centre stone is poured or at least claw set.
There is a literal depth to the asscher cut itself and this particular stone, sourced from Tanzania and cut by the same master gem cutter that created the 14.02 carat aquamarine in Blue Heaven, generates the most phenomenal flashes of purple in certain lighting conditions - an exquisite characteristic of natural rhodolites found only in this part of the world.
As with the concept of terroir in wine terms, it seemed a fitting selection for a couple celebrating more than just a passion for wine. Cut, colour depth and personal meaning; this remarkable piece has it all.
